Emmy Rossum and Lola Pettigrew are earning rave reviews for the twisty new serial killer drama Furious, now streaming on Hulu. It's based on the 1987 Debra Winger/Theresa Russell movie Black Widow, but where that film was a stylish but fairly by-the-numbers net-noir, the show adds depth and layers to both women at the its core: Rossum is FBI Agent Alice Black and Pettigrew is foil and serial killer Catherine Grace—in this version, she's sicker, more sly, and also more interesting, especially once her motivations are made known. It seems a young college student known as K (Kim Hye-jun) is killing creeps, making the murders look like accidents, and arranging to make off with some of the insurance money—kicking off an increasingly dangerous game between the two well-matched opponents. Metro Police Superintendent Stella Gibson (the never-not-brilliant Gillian Anderson) is sent from London to help with a stalled investigation that leads her on a hunt for the clever Spector through physical dangers, mind-fuckery, and bureaucratic complications. Booker-winning novelist Marlon James created and co-wrote this wildly acclaimed miniseries, touching on bias, discrimination, and colonialism in the context of a cracking missing-person drama. Having been "encouraged" to leave Scotland Yard following the death of a missing child she'd been searching for, Detective Millie-Jean Black (Tamara Lawrance) opts to return home to Jamaica and join the police force there. She reunites with her sibling, Hibiscus (Chyna McQueen, who received a BAFTA nomination for this, her first screen role), before being drawn into the case of a Black teenager who seems to have been groomed by a rich white family before disappearing—a case that forces her to work with a condescending colleague sent over from London. Head on over to sunny Copenhagen, where Naia Thulin (Danica Curcic) is assigned to investigate the murder and dismemberment of a young woman in a playground, the best clue being a small figurine made of chestnuts found nearby. When a politician's daughter goes missing, that wee chestnut man is enough to tie the case back to the murder of an entire family on a farm nearly four decades ago. The mystery here is a bit more esoteric, if not entirely supernatural, but it's still appropriately twisty—and the real cat-and-mouse game is between two quite different women drawn into the same case. It's also one of the better creepy-stuff-in-an-isolated location narratives of recent years, moving away from the sweaty bro energy of earlier seasons in favor of a frostier mystery involving missing scientists at a research station near a tiny and necessarily remote Alaskan town, where the dark and the cold are practically characters themselves. The resulting case ties together veteran Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), each with a complicated past and a screwed-up present family life.
