Just over a year later came "Build Me Up Buttercup," which climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the band's signature song in the United States. While Elliott had already left the group by the time the single was released, he helped establish the original Foundations lineup that made the band's success possible and was an original member during its breakthrough era.
