Megan Moroney is partnering with American Girl for a new collection inspired by the country hitmaker, combining her sparkly, playful, bold and confident brand with the historic doll company.
“We sought them out because when I was asked a couple years ago what my North Star things were, American Girl was one of them,” Moroney tells Billboard. “My team has been working on this for quite some time and trying to make it happen for me because I do think it’ll be a lot of little girls’ dream come true to get this doll, but it’s one of mine too.”
The collection features outfits and accessories that are available starting Wednesday (Aug. 5) in American Girl retail outlets and americangirl.com. A corresponding 18-inch Moroney-inspired doll is coming to target.com on Nov. 22 and will be available exclusively in Target stores in December.
In May, Moroney launched her first headlining arena tour, The Cloud 9 Tour, named after her Billboard 200-topping album released in February. The American Girl collection takes inspiration from the glitz and glamour of her concert trek. The items include a Moroney-inspired mic stand (emblazoned with her initials) and sparkly guitar, a pink sequined dress with white boots and a pink heart-shaped bag with a pink doll lip gloss.
Mattel“The sparkly guitar was a non-negotiable,” Moroney says, “and the mic stand literally looks exactly like the one I have on stage. I got all the products in person recently, and it was so surreal to see the pieces, but also to see American Girl and Megan Moroney on the box. I was involved in every step and detail because I wanted it to look as realistic as possible.”
Moroney’s own affinity for American Girl stretches back to her childhood favorite AG doll, Emily Bennett, which was released in 2006.
“Emily was a Christmas present and I had a lot of dolls growing up, but my American Girl doll was the prized possession,” she says. “If I was going to go outside and play with a doll by the pool or somewhere like that, Emily didn’t come because I wanted her to stay looking nice.”
Moroney said part of the appeal of being a part of the storied legacy of the American Girl brand is its emphasis on empowering young people.
“When I think about my fan base, there’s people of all ages, but I always try to be a good influence on the younger fans,” Moroney said. “I feel like by having this collaboration with American Girl, it can inspire fans to dream big and be creative. It’s kind of cool that this is my first product that I’m offering this kind of age group. My thing is just to always have a positive impact on these young girls because I imagine being a young girl nowadays is even harder than it was when I was young, because of social media and stuff. So just kind of giving these girls an outlet and encouraging them to be creative and inspired and confident.”
American Girl x Megan Moroney MattelShe’s quick to point out that being confident doesn’t have to equal flawlessness.
“Being confident to me doesn’t necessarily mean everything’s perfect, but it’s owning who you are, loving who you are and not worrying about what other people say,” she adds. “Because when I think of the obstacles that I’ve almost had in my career, it was because I almost maybe let someone say that I wasn’t good enough to be doing it. I think just owning who you are, being confident and dreaming really big [is important], because I almost was going to be an accountant. My American Girl doll almost had a little calculator.”
For Moroney, whose Cloud 9 setlist is filled with fan favorites such as “Beautiful Things,” “No Caller ID” and “Liars and Tigers and Bears,” the tour has meant more than simply performing songs.
“It’s really surreal, especially being at the arena level,” Moroney says. “I can name my favorite artists I went to see at some of these arenas and I still can’t believe everyone is there for me. It’s just a very ‘pinch me’ moment. I’ve been trying to really be in the moment and trying to take it in each night, because this is such a dream come true, a dream I’ve had since I started writing songs. It’s really special to see and get feedback from my fans that they feel like it’s not just a concert – it feels like an experience they went to that impacted their life.”
Though she says her focus on touring has meant she hasn’t been writing many songs recently, Moroney notes that she has plenty of song ideas squirreled away.
“I’ve got probably more than a hundred ideas in my phone,” she says. “I’ve got some songs that I had written before the tour that didn’t make Cloud 9 that are floating around in my brain. But the main focus is the tour, and then as soon as the tour’s over, I’m sure I’ll do something crazy. So we’ll see.”
