Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 5, Dodgers 1 – August 4, 2026 ...Middle East

That was one of the best wins from this Cubs team in quite some time. The Cubs took game two of the series 5-1, guaranteeing that they can’t lose the season series against the Dodgers. To be the best, you have to beat the best. Well, the Cubs sure are beating the best right now!

Tarik Skubal made his much-anticipated debut with the Dodgers tonight, and it went rather well. He allowed just two runs in six innings of work, striking out six batters in the process. His velocity was up across the board, although that can probably be attributed to it being his first game with the Dodgers. So he was probably amped up. The only two runs he gave up were due to a Dansby Swanson solo home run and an infield single by Nico Hoerner. A quality start is pretty good, but the other starting pitcher was better!

Javier Assad is one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball. Every time he takes the mound, you know there’s a good chance he’s going to have a quality outing. Tonight, he dominated one of the best offenses in baseball, allowing just one run in 5.2 innings. Other than a solo home run by Kyle Tucker in the second, Assad looked in control the entire time. He likely won’t be in the rotation much longer due to the acquisitions of Clay Holmes and Kevin Gausman, but it’s so refreshing to know the Cubs have him as a depth option to start a game if needed.

It was another strong offensive showing for the Cubs lineup, who continue to show that they’re a force to be reckoned with. Swanson opened up the scoring with his 17th home run of the season.

He went 3/4 tonight, with one RBI and two runs.

Nico Hoerner came through with what ended up being the game-winning hit in the sixth inning against Skubal, an infield single to second base. He also homered in the eighth inning, giving him three home runs in his last nine games.

Ryan Zeferjahn made his first appearance in a Cubs uniform, working a perfect eighth inning, followed by yet another scoreless outing from Jacob Webb. Webb has still not allowed a run since June 20!

Javier Assad, who dominated the two-time defending champions, is the Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game. Assad held the Dodgers to just one run across 5.2 innings, lowering his ERA to 3.58 on the year. When you outduel Tarik Skubal, you get the honor.
