Sharon Speedway will honor the late, great Lou Blaney this Saturday for the 18th annual Lou Blaney Night.
During his long racing career, Blaney won more than 600 feature events, was Lernerville Speedway champion eight times, and he was also track champion at Tri-City and Jennerstown, Modified champ five times at Sharon and three at Lernerville.
He was inducted into the Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame, National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Pittsburgh Circle Track and Twin State Auto Racing Club Hall of Fame. The Curbstone Coaches also made him an inductee.
Blaney passed away in January of 2009 at the age of 69. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
This area has produced many great racers, but none greater than Lou Blaney.
He had two sons: Dave, a World of Outlaw champion and NASCAR driver; and Dale, a six-time All-Star Circuit of Champion title holder with 137 victories. He won 11 times with the Outlaws and was a West Virginia basketball Hall of Fame inductee. He is also the oldest winner in World of Outlaw history at the age of 61 in a car his brother Dave built. Dave had previously held that honor. Then, there is Lou’s grandson, Ryan, who is a NASCAR champion.
The Sprint car main event on Saturday will pay $12,000 to the winner and $1,200 to start.
The mighty BRP big block modified series will also be on hand to complete the night’s event. This is a must-see regional event that will attract top racers and many fans with fun activities going on behind the grandstands before race time for all.
The Ryan Blaney Family Foundation will once again be on hand hosting the RBFF tent with exclusive merchandise and educational resources about Alzheimer’s disease. Proceeds from all foundation fundraising activities during the event will benefit the Mahoning Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the Rowan-Cabarrus Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Come on out to honor a local racing legend, support a great cause and see some great racing. Pits open at 3 p.m., gates at 4 p.m., hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30 p.m.
