England bring in their national record holder on the first two legs, with Ollie Morgan doubling up with the 100 back final this evening and Adam Ramsay-Peaty hoping to win his third medal of the meet. The 100 back is over two hours before this relay, so there should be no issues with Morgan swimming that double.
Peaty split 59.33 last night in the mixed medley relay, but was 59.19 in the individual semi-finals. Ed Mildred on fly, however, did drop time in the relay last night with a 51.09 split, after also notching his fastest swim of the meet in the semi-finals.
Jacob Mills will anchor, with his best performances at this meet so far coming on relays. He led off the men’s 4×100 free relay in 48.02 on day 1, and was 48.31 in the 100 free final last night.
Australia replace Isaac Cooper, who scratched the individual 100 back final, with Henry Allan, who has a season best of 53.45. Sam Williamson returns to the breaststroke leg after splitting 58.81 last night, and Matt Temple will hope to reprise his blistering 50.05 split from the mixed medley on fly.
The shock, although based on this week it shouldn’t be, is that Kyle Chalmers is not the anchor leg. He has been the go-to since the Rio Olympics ten years ago, but Flynn Southam has posted the three fastest 100 free swims of the meet and won the 100 free in 47.13, over half a second ahead of Chalmers. Southam will anchor tonight.
South Africa will likely hold a significant lead at the 150m mark, with 100 back Games record holder and world champion Pieter Coetze to lead off. He will hand over to Michael Houlie, who has been front-loading his 100 swims this week, with a projected lead of around two seconds after three lengths.
Chad le Clos will swim fly, having clocked 51.49 in the 100 fly final, and has the chance to win his 21st Commonwealth medal to make him the most successful Commonwealth Game athlete in history. Ruard van Renen anchors, having split 48.34 on the men’s 4×100 free relay.
Canada bring in Josh Liendo and Antoine Sauve on fly and free, as expected. Oliver Dawson remains on breaststroke after splitting 59.45 on the mixed medley last night, and Benjamin Winterborn is the top backstroke option despite having only been as fast as 55.39 this week.
Wales leave Matt Richards off the quartet, with the 100 free silver medalist focusing on the 200 free tonight where he hopes to upgrade that to gold. Harry Milne is his replacement having led off the mixed free relay in 49.42 in the heats, while Josh Inglis comes in on breaststroke and 100 fly national record holder Lewis Fraser takes Milne’s spot on the fly leg after the 18-year-old swam there this morning.
Namibia keep the same quartet that set a national record of 3:44.61 in prelims, while Northern Ireland also name an unchanged team.
Scotland swapped out all four legs from the heats, bringing in 100 back finalist Matt Ward and 100 fly semi-finalist Dean Fearn. Duncan Scott returns to the anchor after bringing the mixed medley home for a bronze medal last night, while there is a swim for Archie Goodburn on the breaststroke leg. The Scottish record holder in the 50 breast made his first Commonwealth final in that event earlier this week, two years after being diagnosed with oligodendrogliomas, a form of brain cancer.
