We knew something was brewing for the young South African last night, when he nailed a new Games Record of 52.20 in the individual event’s semi-finals before dropping it even further to 51.98 as lead-off on the South African mixed medley relay.
That represented the second occasion on which Coetze cleared the 52-second barrier, with the other milestone checking in at the 51.85 which took him to the top of the podium at the 2025 World Championships.
Coetze’s time tonight in Glasgow, now his 3rd performance under 52 seconds, represents the 2nd-fastest performance in history, sitting only behind World Record holder Thomas Ceccon of Italy’s standard of 51.60 notched in 2022.
