New details were revealed this week after a deadly weekend boat crash on the Fox River left a 48-year-old woman killed, with prosecutors describing the man charged in the case as a “ticking time bomb” because of his history of DUI charges dating back more than 20 years.
Richard Stevenson, of Lisle, is facing multiple charges in the case, including aggravated DUI and reckless homicide, records show. According to prosecutors, Stevenson’s blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit when he sped his high-powered pontoon in a slow zone and slammed into another boat from behind at 80 mph.
The incident, which left 48-year-old Magdalena Jablonska killed, unfolded about 2:30 p.m. Sunday along the Fox River south of the McHenry Dam in McHenry, officials said. Stevenson, who was driving a 31-foot pontoon, struck the rear of a 20-foot Crownline Jablonska was in before “riding over” the smaller boat and coming to a stop on land.
“Our rivers and lakes should be places where families can safely enjoy time together, not places where the reckless and impaired can turn a summer day into a tragedy,” McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi L. Freese said in a statement posted to social media. “No family should have to endure the unimaginable loss suffered in this case.”
Prosecutors said they found Stevenson in the trees off the shoreline after the crash. Two other occupants of the pontoon left the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Stevenson was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital, where blood tests showed he had a blood alcohol concentration of approximately .200. Multiple witnesses said they saw Stevenson drinking alcohol throughout the day while driving at high rates of speed on both the Chain O’ Lakes and the Fox River before the crash.
During a detention hearing Monday, prosecutors said Stevenson has been charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol on three prior occasions. He had also been charged with Reckless Driving on three prior occasions and four misdemeanor speeding offenses.
“This man was a ticking time-bomb and that bomb went off this past Saturday on the Fox River,” Deputy Chief Brian Miller said at the hearing.
Stevenson was employed by the family-owned and Bolingbrook-based Stevenson Crane Company. A statement from the company said Richard, who worked in the equipment sales department, was terminated Monday, and that he did not hold a leadership role.
“We offer our sincerest condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones,” the statement went on to say.
Stevenson was held detained until his next court date, scheduled for Aug. 5.
