She has now hacked 2.25 seconds off her lifetime best in the last 12 months, establishing herself as a force on the world stage. She was just 0.13 seconds behind Jenna Forrester to win silver in tonight’s final, winning her second silver of the meet after finishing 2nd in the 100 breast on day 3.
She has lowered the South African record by over a second this season as well. Rebecca Meder, who placed 7th tonight in a time of 2:11.23, was the previous record-holder before Canny claimed the record last month, posting a time of 2:10.39 at the South African Championships last year.
Canny remains ranked as the #2 African swimmer in history, but has now narrowed the gap to African record holder and current IOC president Kirsty Coventry to less than a second.
Canny’s swim tonight also cracks the African all-time top five performances, breaking Coventry’s stranglehold over that list that has lasted nearly two decades.

She was slightly faster on both the breaststroke and freestyle legs as well, and moved up from 7th at halfway tonight to take silver.

She has carried that form over to long course superbly, setting African records in the 200 free, 200 IM, and 400 IM this season, and won her first major international medals this week.
She has not done it in the events which were initially her strength. She scratched both the 100 free and 200 free at this meet, despite being the African record holder in the latter (1:56.59) and just 0.04 seconds off the African record in the former in 54.27, both of which were swum at the South African Championships in April.
She has instead chosen to swim the 100 breast, placing 2nd in 1:06.19, and the 200 IM, placing 2nd in 2:09.37. She will swim the 200 breast tomorrow as the #3 seed in 2:23.61, and will anchor South Africa’s medal-contending mixed 4×100 medley relay tonight.
