Did tornadoes touch down in Monday storms? NWS reports ‘several probable paths' ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The National Weather Service will have crews assessing what exactly happened across the Chicago area as severe storms led to “swaths of extensive” damage Monday.

According to the NWS, Monday’s severe thunderstorms resulted in “several probable tornado paths” along with “significant” straight line wind damage, large hail and flash flooding.

“Survey teams will conduct ground assessments of some of the hardest hit areas,” the NWS wrote on social media Tuesday, noting at least two probable tornado locations.

A report was generated at approximately 12:50 p.m. Monday of a tornado that had touched down in Orland Park. A later report also indicated a possible tornado touchdown in Glen Ellyn in DuPage County.

The storms left behind a trail of damage across the region.

In south suburban Lansing, residents were dealing with devastating loss, but no reports of serious injuries. In Homewood, a gigantic tree, perhaps around 8 feet wide, crashed down onto the street. In Hazel Crest, bricks and siding blew off the walls of an apartment building, and in Markham, the roof of a commercial building sailed off.

Tennis ball-sized hail was reported in parts of the region as streets flooded and crews worked to fix downed power lines and outages that left more than half a million people without power. Wind speeds in excess of 80 mph were reported with some of the storms, leaving many picking up debris.

“We know many customers who remain without power following Monday’s storms are frustrated – and we get it.The reality is that northern Illinois is experiencing a level of severe weather unlike what we’ve seen in recent years,” ComEd said in a statement. “In fact, our service area has already experienced more storms this year than in all of 2025, with five months remaining in the year. Storms are becoming more frequent, more powerful and more destructive.”

Among the hardest hit areas for power outages were Maywood, Crestwood, Bolingbrook, University Park, Chicago Heights, Glen Ellyn, Skokie, Waukegan and Libertyville.
