Very hot and humid conditions were back in the Chicago forecast Monday, with heat index levels up to 110 degrees in some locations, along with two waves of storms that could be severe with heavy rain, hail and even the chance for tornadoes.
“That tornado threat is low,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said. “But it’s non-zero going into the afternoon.”
Fog was also blanketing the Chicago area Monday morning, with a dense fog advisory and low visibility in McHenry, DeKalb, Kane, LaSalle, Kendall and Grundy Counties in Illinois and Kenosha County in Wisconsin through 8 a.m.
“If you will be out driving, use caution. Slow down, keep a safe following distance, and use low beams when driving in dense fog,” the National Weather Service warned.
In DeKalb, LaSalle and Grundy Counties, an extreme heat warning was also in effect through 9 p.m., with “dangerously hot conditions.”
“Peak heat index values 110 to locally over 115 degrees expected,” the NWS said.
All other parts of the Chicago area, including northwest Indiana, were under a heat advisory with peak heat index values between 100 and 110 degrees.
Early Monday morning, temperatures were already in the 80s, with dew points in the upper 70s. As the day goes on, highs in the low 90s were expected.
“We’re in that miserable category,” Roman said, of the humidity. “Very, very humid this morning and afternoon.”
Severe weather chances
Monday afternoon is also when widespread showers and storms could move in, starting about 12 p.m. to the north before pushing south.
About 6 p.m., a second round of storms could develop, also starting to the north before pushing south and into northwest Indiana.
The Storm Prediction Center placed the entire Chicago area under an “enhanced” threat of severe weather Monday, which ranks as level three of five.
“If storms occur, they could be severe, capable of destructive winds locally over 70 mph and hail the size of golf balls,” the NWS said.
Any storms that do develop could also produce “torrential” rainfall, the NWS said, with a level one of five tornado risk.
