Greg McElroy predicts winner of Tennessee QB competition ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Greg McElroy knows what playing quarterback in the SEC is like, having done it at the highest level at Alabama. He was the guy at the helm when the Crimson Tide won their first of 6 national championships under Nick Saban in 2009.

Now, McElroy is a college football analyst with a podcast called Always College Football, and earlier this week he used his eye for quarterbacks to break down the QB competition that is currently in full force at Tennessee. The Volunteers couldn’t bring back Joey Aguilar, who applied for a waiver seeking another year of eligibility but was denied by the NCAA in February.

So, Josh Heupel‘s Volunteers had to move on, and now with the 2026 season fast approaching Tennessee is still trying to find out who its starting quarterback will be. There is redshirt freshman George MacIntyre, there is fellow redshirt freshman Mason Phillips, there is redshirt junior transfer Ryan Staub, who arrives from Colorado, and there is true freshman Faizon Brandon.

Those are the 4 quarterbacks on the Vols’ roster, and McElroy believes he knows who it will be under center when the season opener arrives.

“This is one of the more unpredictable quarterback rooms in America,” McElroy said.

As unpredictable as it might be, McElroy had to make a prediction, and he’s going with the true freshman. He’s going with Brandon, who was the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2026 recruiting class.

“After watching him just a little bit … I think he’s ready,” McElroy said on Wednesday. “I think it’s going to be Faizon Brandon for Tennessee this year.”

McElroy believes the question marks in Tennessee’s QB room will lead Heupel to choose Brandon.

“Nobody in that room has proven they can go win you the SEC, so you go with the guy who might,” McElroy said.

As fall camp plays out, so will the Tennessee quarterback derby. And time will tell if McElroy was right on, if the true freshman is the guy who emerges from that uncertain QB room in Knoxville.

No matter who Tennessee has under center this fall, the Volunteers will be trying to be relevant again in the SEC title discussion. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the top SEC teams in the mix for that coveted conference championship prize in December:
