SOLVANG, Calif. (KEYT) - Disney's hit musical Frozen is now on the stage in the Solvang Festival Theater and is now heating up the ongoing summer season for PCPA.
Disney's Frozen premiered in Solvang on Sunday, July 6 marking the second of three shows PCPA is holding inside the beloved outdoor theater.
"It's always magical to return to the Solvang Festival Theater," said longtime PCPA Artistic Director Mark Booher. "It's become our summer home, and so we always feel welcomed back in the community, and hopefully an important part of people's summer traditions is to go sit there in the Festival Theater under the stars and see a great story. It's really it's always a pleasure to be back there."
PCPA, which has been holding performances in the Solvang Festival Theater ever since the 700-seat venue opened its doors in 1974, kicked off its 2026 summer season with a two-week run of the musical Come From Away.
Now, it's Disney's Frozen on the stage will a return engagement to the Central Coast, coming just six months after PCPA held the show back in November and December late last year.
"We knew when we were doing Frozen in the Marian Theatre that were going to be bringing it down to the Solvang Festival Theater this summer, and so every decision we made creatively was about what would it take to put that magical musical out under the stars," said Booher. "I think that's going to prove really true, that there's something special and magical about Frozen as a piece, but doing it outside in the open air under the stars is going to add that extra special layer that I think is going to be really thrilling."
Booher added that even though people may think of Frozen as more appropriate for the winter, he pointed out that it's actually very suitable for a summertime showing.
"I think what people forget is the musical is set in the summer," said Booher. "The thing that's magical about it, and the problem that needs to be solved, is Elsa's magic turns summer into winter, and that's what has to get resolved. The whole journey of the the story is to bring back summer and so here we are. We're going to be in July and it's going to snow outside and we're going to have to figure that out in the Festival Theater!"
Disney's Frozen will run in Solvang from July 6 through August 2 and will be followed by Beehive - The 60s Musical.
"Beehive is a wonderful celebration of pop music in the 60s, all by female artists, and is really the story about how America was changing in the late 60s, particularly between 1965 and 1969," said Booher. "It's an amazing time of change in America, but led and reflected in popular music of the time, and so it's a song cycle of great 60s pop music, lots of tunes that we've been tapping our toes to and swinging our hips to for decades, but also a story of America during that time."
