A Chicago Police Department SWAT officer was shot while attempting to breach a residence where two people were being held hostage, authorities say.
During a press conference Monday afternoon, Interim Police Supt. Fred Waller said the officer was part of a SWAT team that was called to a barricade situation in the 4600 block of North Springfield just before 11 a.m. Monday.
Police had been called to a residence in the area for reports of a woman who had been shot, and officers performed CPR on the victim before she was transported to an area hospital, Waller said. The woman’s current condition is not known at this time.
It was then officers were told a suspect in the shooting was holding two individuals, an adult woman and a juvenile girl, hostage inside of the residence. SWAT teams were called to the area at that time.
When that SWAT team tried to breach the door of the residence, the suspect allegedly fired shots through the door and through a wall, striking a SWAT officer in the abdomen. According to police, that officer was evacuated from the residence and was taken to a nearby hospital, where they underwent surgery. Their condition has since stabilized, and they have been able to meet with their family, according to authorities.
Police then began negotiating with the suspect, who eventually released both hostages. He then surrendered without incident and was taken into custody Monday afternoon.
Charges are pending in the case, and an investigation remains underway.
“We are incredibly grateful for the swift and accurate work of our police department,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said. “This is yet another reminder of how hard this department works on behalf of the people of Chicago. It’s also further indication that our officers show up to a variety of scenes. It is unfortunate that domestic violence exists in the way that it does in this city, but we are grateful for our police department and SWAT department that they were able to de-escalate this situation.”
