McEntee, who turns 71 on July 16, was an original member of Air Supply, joining Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock after the trio met during the Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar in the mid-1970s. As the band's original lead guitarist, he played on Air Supply's self-titled 1976 debut album before leaving later that year to pursue a different musical direction.
In 1980, McEntee reunited with former Air Supply bandmate Jeremy Paul for a new project with an electrifying young singer named Chrissy Amphlett. The result was Divinyls.
Released in 1990, "I Touch Myself" became the band's signature hit, reaching No. 1 in Australia, No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 10 in the United Kingdom. Its provocative lyrics made headlines around the world, but the song's infectious melody and fearless attitude helped cement the Divinyls' place in rock history.
In her 2005 memoir "Pleasure and Pain," Amphlett described him as her "most intense friendship," but acknowledged that their relationship was often fueled by alcohol, drugs and explosive arguments. She wrote that the pair endured "screaming matches" that sometimes escalated into physical fights, while longtime manager Vince Lovegrove later said their "weird, foaming-at-the-mouth furious, loving, hopelessly dependent relationship was the magic of Divinyls."
When Amphlett died in 2013 following battles with breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, tributes poured in from around the world. Hugh Jackman called her "one of a rare breed," while Russell Crowe remembered her as someone who loved life until the very end. Their loss underscored just how influential the Divinyls had become, not only in Australia but across the international rock community.
