The beloved musician turns 74 on July 16 and celebrates a shining career spanning more than 50 years. Born in Alexandria, VA, Copeland began drumming at the age of 12 and was playing for school dances by the time he was a teenager. In 1975, he joined the rock band Curved Air, which was his first professional drumming gig, before founding progressive rock band The Police in 1977.
It was the trio's 1983 hit, "Every Breath You Take," that launched The Police to global superstardom, achieving chart dominance in the U.S. and becoming the rockers' signature song.
In 2003, Copeland was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was placed at No. 10 onRolling Stone's list of "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time."
Following The Police's disbandment in 1984, Copeland pivoted to composing and has scored some of the biggest titles in film and television.
