For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Canadian freestyler Gabriel Ardeleanu, who raced at the 2025 World Cup stop in Toronto, has announced his verbal commitment to swim for The Ohio State University beginning in the fall of 2027.
“I am proud and honoured to announce my verbal commitment to The Ohio State University to pursue an academic and athletic career at the Division I level! I want to thank my parents for making this possible, as well as Coach Ian, Coach Jorge, Coach Kim, Coach Ulf, and Cobra Swim Club for allowing me to do the sport I love and for taking a chance on a 13-year-old boy who had never swam competitively a day in his life. Who knew it would lead to this? You have single-handedly helped shape me into the person and athlete I am today, and I will always be grateful to everyone who supported and believed in me.
I also want to thank Coach Bill, Coach Norm, the entire Ohio State staff and athletes for making it feel like home and believing in my potential. The work is just beginning… GO BUCKS ️️!!!”
Based in Georgetown, Ontario, Ardeleanu recently wrapped up his junior year of high school and trains with Cobra Swim Club, where he primarily specializes in the sprint and mid-distance freestyle events.
Ardeleanu is relatively new to the competitive swimming scene, as he didn’t start competing until he was 13 years old and has been racing for just under four years now.
Ardeleanu posted a series of strong performances at the 2025 Ontario Championships (LCM) last summer, logging a lifetime best in four events. He won the 200 free (1:53.89), 400 free (4:04.02) and 800 free (8:24.93 – PB). He also took the runner-up spot in the 100 free (51.83 – PB) and placed 9th in the 400 IM (4:48.39 – PB) and 14th in the 50 free (25.12). He clocked a personal best time of 4:03.28 in the 400 free during the preliminary heats of the event.
Most recently, Ardeleanu competed at the 2026 June Performance Meet (LCM), which saw him clock two new personal best times. He prevailed in the 200 free (1:54.18), 400 free (4:08.66) and 800 free (8:29.38) and placed 2nd in the 50 back (27.64 – PB), 3rd in the 100 free (52.10) and 7th in the 50 free (24.65 – PB).
An equally strong competitor in the short course events, Ardeleanu raced at the 2025 World Cup (SCM) stop in Toronto, turning in two lifetime best performances. He contested the 100 free (51.27 – PB), 200 free (1:49.56 – PB) and 400 free (3:57.31). A few months later, he threw down a string of top swims at the 2025 Ontario Junior International meet (SCM); he placed 3rd in the 200 free (1:47.21), 4th in the 400 free (3:54.79) and 24th in the 50 free (23.69), setting a best time in each event. He also placed 6th in the 100 free in 49.96 after turning in a best time of 49.93 during prelims.
Best Times SCM (SCY Conversion):
50 free – 23.69 (21.34) 100 free – 49.93 (44.98) 200 free – 1:47.21 (1:36.58) 400 free – 3:52.47 (4:25.68) 800 free – 8:22.57 (9:34.36)A Division I program, Ohio State competes in the Big Ten Conference, with the men’s team taking 3rd at this past season’s conference championships before sending seven athletes to compete at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship, where they placed 13th overall. To earn a second swim at the 2026 Big Ten Conference Championships, it took times of 20.19/43.71/1:35.63/4:21.99 in the 50/100/200/500 free, putting Ardeleanu outside the cutoff in each of his top events.
On the team itself, Ardeleanu would have ranked 7th in the 200 free, 8th in the 500 free and 6th in the 1000 free this past season based on his projected SCY time conversions. With another full season before he joins the team, it remains to be seen exactly how the roster will shake out.
Currently set to join Ardeleanu in Ohio State’s class of 2031 are Caden Mahl, Will Van Zee, Jackson Hartzler, Luke Collins, Ewan Dalrymple, Colt Chaires and Camren Turowski, who should all make for strong training partners over their four years together.
