It may be peak summer heat in the Chicago area, but for those of you looking ahead to crisp fall temperatures, changing leaves and pumpkin spice, a new forecast prediction is in for the season ahead.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac has issued its predictions for the fall 2026 season, and it appears fall lovers are in for a treat in the Chicago area.
Accurately predicting weather beyond two weeks can be particularly challenging, but the Almanac believes this fall will be cooler and drier than normal the lower Great Lakes region.
“September will be cooler than average before temperatures return to near average in October. Rainfall is expected to be near average in September, then trend slightly below average in October,” the Almanac stated.
The Climate Prediction Center’s three-month outlook shows below-average temps continuing through September, with equal chances for rain or drought, in northern Illinois.
This years’ strengthening El Niño could also become the strongest on record by fall. In the most recent update, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Climate Prediction Center showed an 81% chance of a “very-strong El Niño”, with peak-strength expected in the October-November-December timeframe, possibly even earlier.
El Niño typically means a milder and drier winter for the Chicago area. However even the strongest El Niño events do not lead to the typical impact everywhere, but stronger events can more significantly tilt the odds in favor of expected outcomes.
According to the Almanac predictions, much of the Midwest looks to be dry through fall, though some areas are expected to be either warmer or cooler than normal.
