Patricia Arquette’s Cult Classic, With a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, Is Leaving Netflix Soon ...Saudi Arabia

One of Tony Scott‘s most acclaimed directorial films was released in 1993, starring Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette in a romantic crime drama that is a must-watch on Netflix before it’s too late.

Not all films and series on Netflix stay forever. Some are holiday additions, while others have a limited shelf life. Netflix’s Tudum released its list of movies set to leave the streaming platform in November, including True Romance on Nov. 19, alongside Saw X.

The 1993 film was considered a box-office failure, making back its budget and then some, at $12.5 million. Critics and fans had different thoughts about the film, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 93% score and critics calling it a “funny and violent action jaunt in the best sense.”

Robert Ebert gave True Romance a positive review, praising its supporting cast of actors and “the energy and style of the movie are exhilarating.” The film was released in early September, directed by Scott, who directed Top Gun, and written by Quentin Tarantino.

Slater and Arquette starred alongside Hollywood stars Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, and Christopher Walken in supporting roles. True Romance became one of the ’90s’ best action films, following a recently married couple on the run.

Alabama Whitman (Arquette), a call girl, falls in love with Elvis Presley fanatic Clarence Worley (Slater) and marry the next day. Worley is convinced by an apparition of Elvis to kill Alabama’s pimp and steals what he assumes is a bag of her things.

To both their surprise, the bag was full of cocaine, and the pimp had stolen it from two drug pushers he had murdered. It just so happens that the drugs are connected to the mafia, and they are now after the couple. The two have no choice but to flee to California, hoping to stay alive.

True Romance became a pop culture powerhouse for a few reasons, as critics called it the “cinematic equivalent of cocaine-flavoured bubble-gum: a bright, flavoursome confection that had an intoxicatingly violent kick.”

The film’s script was penned by Tarantino while he was still a budding director. It was reported that Tarantino sold the screenplay to fund his highly acclaimed cult classic film, Reservoir Dogs, which was released a year before True Romance. Many took inspiration from the film, leading it to become a pop culture hit as well.

Pineapple Express was inspired by Pitt’s stoner character in the film, and it even led to one of TV’s greatest castings. It was reported that James Gandolfini landed the role of Tony Soprano in The Sopranos thanks to his role as Virgil in True Romance. He was invited to audition for the role after the casting director saw his limited performance.
