Vasseur: No ‘game-changer’ behind Hamilton turnaround ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Lewis Hamilton’s remarkable turnaround at Ferrari has been one of the defining stories of the 2026 Formula 1 season, but team principal Fred Vasseur believes the seven-time world champion’s resurgence cannot be traced to a single breakthrough.

After a difficult first campaign with the Scuderia that ended without a podium finish, Hamilton has re-established himself among Formula 1’s frontrunners.

The Briton has already claimed five podiums this season, including a long-awaited victory in Barcelona that ended a winless spell stretching back almost two years.

The improved results have also thrust Hamilton into the heart of the championship fight. He currently spearheads Ferrari’s title challenge in third place, just 32 points behind championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Vasseur: Progress has come from every direction

Rather than pointing to one defining change, Vasseur says Hamilton’s return to form has been the product of a steadily evolving partnership between driver, team and machinery.

“I think it’s coming from both sides,” he told reporters last time out at Silverstone.

“That we know Lewis more, he knows more the team. That we work on the car from the beginning, because he was there when we started the project a long year ago.

“Small stone after small stone, it’s not that there is a game-changer, it’s not a one single stone, it’s much more aligned today. The car is probably also better than last year, for sure, and step-by-step we are improving.”

Hamilton joined Ferrari amid huge expectations, but adapting to a new environment after more than a decade at Mercedes proved challenging during his debut season.

With a full year of collaboration now behind them – and the Briton involved in the development of the current car from its earliest stages – Ferrari appears to have found a far stronger rhythm.

Button points to changing car characteristics

Former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button agrees that Hamilton’s growing familiarity with Ferrari has undoubtedly helped, but believes the biggest factor lies elsewhere.

According to Button, the latest generation of Formula 1 cars better complements Hamilton’s natural driving style than the machinery he wrestled with during the final years of his Mercedes career.

"I'm sure over the winter they had time to sit down and discuss what worked for him, what doesn't work for him," Button said on the Sky Sports F1 Show.

"It's the first year, you know, their relationship, the engineer relationship is always a really tricky one as well, especially when you've left someone like Bono [Peter Bonnington] at Mercedes. It's such a close relationship. So, it does take a minute.

"It has to be part of it, but I still think the biggest part of it is just the car. The car suits his style more. It's a Formula 1 car he's used to driving in terms of feel. For me, that is way above settling into a team and making them listen.

“He wasn't there at Mercedes either the last four years. He's not really been the Lewis that we remember, absolutely annihilating his team-mate in qualifying. George [Russell] had the better of him quite a lot of the time.

“So, I think it's down more so to the style of cars. We're back to a car that's more natural now. It's more of a normal Formula 1 car."

Hamilton lifts lid on Ferrari success: ‘We’re allies rather than foes’

Whether Hamilton’s resurgence stems more from a stronger Ferrari package or a closer alignment between driver and team, the results have been undeniable.

For Vasseur, however, the explanation remains far simpler: sustained progress built through countless incremental gains, rather than a single transformative moment.
