Rockies Plan to Build Their Roster “As If We’re Not Going to Have” Kris Bryant ...Middle East

The mention of John Mallee being pursued by the Mets earlier today had me thinking about his first stint with the Cubs, and the young talent that came up as part of the championship team.

That in turn had me thinking about Kris Bryant, about whom I hadn’t heard much this year after he was shut down with the degenerative back issue. So I did some searching to find out any after-season comments from him or the Rockies organization to see what the offseason might hold for him, and, unfortunately, the comments weren’t all that encouraging.

From Denver Sports:

“I think we have to continue to move forward from a roster-building standpoint as if we’re not going to have him,” [Rockies President Paul] DePodesta said. “And if we do, then that’s a great bonus.” …

Asked whether the team had discussed restructuring or deferring the rest of Bryant’s salary, DePodesta said nothing had changed.

“There’s nothing new at this point,” he said. “Obviously, Kris wasn’t able to play this year, so we just have to continue to stay in touch with him and see how things progress through the course of this offseason.”

It’s obviously a reasonable approach by an organization, but it still bums me out to hear.

Bryant, 34, has played in just 170 games total since signing with the Rockies ahead of the 2022 season, hitting .244/.324/.370/82 wRC+ in that time (-1.8 WAR). His deal runs through the 2028 season, and it doesn’t sound like the Rockies are optimistic that he’ll contribute in that time. Frankly, you just hope Bryant can get to a place where he can live a pain-free life.

From the Spring Training check-in:

“Anytime my feet hit the ground, I feel like I could probably fall over,” Bryant said, per the Denver Post. “It’s unfortunate and obviously not how I want this to go. I’m here to figure things out and find out if there is a way to get better ….

“It’s not easy waking up in pain every day, but now we are here. I’m just trying to determine the next step with the training staff and doctors …. “Obviously I have to [cling to hope]. Because it’s not just something I’m going to deal with now, I’m going to deal with this the rest of my life. I’ve talked to a lot of people about it. I know a ton of people, not just playing baseball, but people who have terrible backs too. I could never have expected this or seen this coming. And now that I’m dealing with it, I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. It’s miserable …. Some days it’s hard to grab the toothpaste in front of me. It’s not like that every day, but those days it’s like you just wish you had some type of answer.”

Bryant went on to describe the pain as sometimes feeling like his whole body is being electrocuted. It just makes me so sad to hear that, not only for Bryant as a baseball player whose performance I greatly enjoyed, but simply as a fellow human being. It sounds like a horrible thing to go through – I have had some bad back experiences in my day, including surgery, but what Bryant describes is so much worse. I really hope the doctors and trainers can figure out a way for him to find some comfort, and, maybe in time, improvement.
