A popular suburban waterpark issued an alert to visitors after authorities announced charges against a man accused of inappropriately touching a child.
Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park in Woodridge said over the weekend it would remain open “under enhanced vigilance.”
“The Woodridge Park District is committed to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and family-friendly environment for all visitors and is grateful for the swift response and continued support of law enforcement,” the park district said in a statement Saturday.
DuPage County officials announced a Lombard man has been charged with aggravated battery in a public place after being accused of “inappropriately touching a minor girl” at the waterpark.
The 61-year-old, identified as Ricky Karlic, appeared in court Saturday, but was released on electronic monitoring.
Prosecutors said the incident happened around 5:30 p.m. Friday, when Karlic allegedly “made physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature” with the minor, touching the girl’s “buttocks with his hand while in the lazy river.”
“The allegation that Mr. Karlic inappropriately touched a young girl at a public water park is extremely disturbing,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “Today’s charge sends the message that in DuPage County we are committed to keeping our public recreational facilities safe for all to enjoy.”
Woodridge Chief of Police Tom Stefanson said the incident is “concerning,” but noted the city and its park “are safe areas for all to enjoy.”
Stefanson said Karlic was taken into custody while “trying to leave the area.” His next court appearance is set for Aug. 3.
