ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A News10NBC Yellow Alert has been posted for Tuesday ahead of expected dangerous heat and humidity. Though this heat will be short lived, it is crucial to be aware of the impact extreme heat and humidity can have on the body, so a Yellow Alert is being posted as a heads up. Air temperatures on Tuesday are forecasted to reach 92 degrees for Rochester, though it is possible that we may reach into the mid-90s. Since humidity will be high as well, heat index values will rise. It will likely feel like over 100 degrees on Tuesday. As always, it is recommended to limit time outdoors. If you work outdoors, please remember to hydrate throughout the day, take frequent breaks, and wear lightweight/light colored clothing. Most importantly, listen to your body. In high humidity, it becomes increasingly difficult for your body to cool off naturally, thus, increasing heat related illnesses. Secondary to the heat, Tuesday will be quite windy with sustained winds between 15 to 25 mph and wind gusts possible between 30 and 40 mph.
For right now, Sunday evening’s weather remains quiet and comfortable. Temperatures will reach near a low of 61 degrees Sunday night with winds staying light out of the southeast between 5 and 10 mph. No rain is expected through the overnight hours. Temperatures turn warmer on Monday with a forecasted high of 88 degrees, though some locations across Western New York may push 90 degrees. However, lower humidity levels on Monday will keep heat index values around 90 degrees. No rain is anticipated on Monday, but a 10% chance of a passing lake-breeze enhanced shower remains. Monday night lows will near 67 degrees and dew point temperatures will rise as conditions turn noticeably more humid.
Looking ahead: Tuesday’s heat and humidity, though intense, will be short lived. A front moves from north to south across New York state on Wednesday. This front will not bring much, if any, precipitation. However, it will bring a steep drop in dew point temperatures and a wind shift. Though we will wake up humid and warm Wednesday morning, you can expect a drop in temperatures and humidity later on Wednesday. High temperatures return back to the low-80s on Thursday and Friday. As for an update on the weekend, the weather still remains less-than-desirable. Scattered thunderstorms will be likely both Saturday and Sunday. The European and American data models are still not in agreement regarding the track of this approaching low-pressure system and how long it will hang around. We will update you on the timing and track of this system as data becomes clearer.
