In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Birkhead said he "absolutely" opposes Trust Me, I'm a Doctor, an upcoming film centered on Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, the physician who treated Smith before her death in 2007.
The film is based on Kapoor's 2017 memoir about treating Smith in the years leading up to her fatal drug overdose at age 39. Kapoor was later charged with illegally prescribing medications to the model but was acquitted in 2010. Actor Kal Penn portrays Kapoor in the film, while Abbie Cornish stars as Smith.
"I warned them about the harm and the emotional distress that this puts on not just myself but also, most importantly, Dannielynn," he told the outlet.
As for the casting, Birkhead said he doesn't believe anyone has fully captured Smith on screen.
Trust Me, I'm a Doctor is scheduled to open in theaters on Oct. 16.
