A bizarre series of coincidences allowed a suburban teen to save his dad’s life, the family told NBC Chicago on Thursday.
The “miracle” save was due in large part to the fact that the youngest member of Palatine’s Mollenhauer family was in the right place at the right time and with the right training.
Ethan Mollenhauer, a 9th grader, said he heard a fall and then found his dad laying on his stomach by his bed on April 17. The young boy didn’t hesitate and jumped into action, first calling 911.
The dispatcher told Ethan to flip his father over and start CPR after he told her he knew how.
Ethan had learned how to do CPR just weeks prior in one of his classes at Thomas Jefferson Middle School — a class he said he didn’t even want to take.
“It was my third choice,” Ethan told NBC Chicago. He also said he was at home when his father collapsed because of his school’s early release on Fridays.
Ethan performed CPR on his father for roughly five minutes, he said, though to him it only felt like 15 to 30 seconds.
His father, a police commander in Rolling Meadows, said he is “so proud of him.”
“I am so prideful,” Commander Sam Mollenhauer said. “Best kid in the world and so super smart.”
