CUBS LINEUP — Today, the Chicago Cubs are going for a sweep in Baltimore, with David Peterson set to make his third start in a Cubs uniform. As a reminder, Peterson’s first start with the Cubs went really well, and his second was a full-on disaster. But the Orioles struggle versus left-handed pitching, so he should be set up for some success today. Let’s all hope.
Speaking of success versus lefties, the Cubs (117 wRC+) are the top offense in MLB versus southpaws this year. And the Orioles are starting a lefty. The matchup favors Chicago, though, as I note down below, Trevor Rogers’ recent six-start stretch has been really, really good.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Alex Bregman, 3B Seiya Suzuki, RF Carson Kelly, DH Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Dansby Swanson, SS Miguel Amaya, CWith a lefty on the mound, Seiya Suzuki is headed out to right field for Michael Conforto, opening up DH for Carson Kelly (notably not for Kevin Alcantara), who bats cleanup.
That pushes Michael Busch down to fifth, and with Nico Hoerner staying at six, that leaves Ian Happ in the bottom third, which is where he should be versus left-handed pitching.
Dansby Swanson bats eighth, and Miguel Amaya is catching and turning things over.
Let’s get that sweep and escape Baltimore before the rain comes, eh? Go Cubs.
Baltimore Orioles Lineup:
Adley Rutschmann, C Taylor Ward, LF Gunnar Henderson, SS Pete Alonso, 1B Tyler O’Neill, RF Coby Mayo, 3B Sam Basallo, C Blaze Alexander, 2B Leody Taveras, CFPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: David Peterson, LHP
David Peterson’s first start with the Cubs went about as well as you could’ve reasonably hoped, especially against the Brewers (5.2 IP, 2ER). But his second start went, well, exactly the opposite: 3.2 IP, 9H, 10ER, 3BB, 3K. Some of those runs scored after he left (and he was probably held out there a little longer than you’d expect after the game was out of reach), but still. It wasn’t great.
The one point of nuance I will address, however, is that I think almost all of those earned runs came with two outs in various innings. They still count all the same, but he was really close to escaping a handful of times. When you’re a borderline back-end starter, that’s how things go. Sometimes you escape, sometimes you don’t.
Either way, Peterson is set up for success this afternoon in Baltimore, against an Orioles team that has struggled against left-handed pitching all year (91 wRC+, 22nd in MLB).
Baltimore Orioles: Trevor Rogers, LHP
Trevor Rogers had a really impressive breakout over 18 starts with the Orioles last season, earning a 1.81 ERA (3.40 xERA, 2.82 FIP) over 109.2 IP. But he has not come close to matching that, as a whole, this season: 4.70 ERA, 4.15 xERA, 4.03 FIP.
The biggest change is the drop in strikeouts. Last season, he whiffed 24.3% of the batters he faced, but this year it’s down to 18.1%. That’s solidly above average to solidly below average. Meanwhile, his walk rate climbed, his line drive rate climbed, and his fly ball rate has climbed (with his groundball rate nose-diving).
More walks plus fewer strikeouts and groundballs is never a recipe for success. Thus, the decline.
The other biggest change is that righties have completely figured him out. Last year, right-handed batters had just a .233 wOBA off Rogers. This year, it’s .341. That’s a HUGE difference. Righties are also striking out just 15.6% of the time.
Now, that was all the GOOD news.
The bad news is that, more recently, Rogers has actually been very, very good again.
Over his last six starts (dating back to June 4), Rogers has allowed just 7 earned runs total in 35.2 IP. The strikeout rate remains low, but his walks came down and so did the barrel rate. So it’s quite possible he’s in a groove at the moment. Don’t let that big ERA (6.84 through June 3) fool you too much.
