Russell, the former keyboard player, saxophonist and vocalist of The Christians, is celebrating his 70th birthday. One of the founders of the soul band, along with his brothers Garry and Roger, and Henry Priestman, Paul Barlow, Mike Bulger and Tony Jones, The Christians were established in 1985 in Liverpool, England. Since their formation, they have put out seven studio albums, including anniversary re-releases for their first two albums: The Christians and Colour.

Despite their success throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band broke up briefly in 1995 due to Garry Christian moving to Paris to record a solo album. Two years later, they reunited and went on a huge tour across Europe and the United Kingdom, regrouping as an acoustic group.

In 2005, Russell Christian left the band because he didn't want to tour. Since then, he has pursued his own music career and has been self-releasing singles and EPs on Spotify. His most recent single, "Start a War," was released last month. Russell is now based in Las Vegas, and his solo project is influenced by "his love of American roots music" and combines the genres of Americana, folk, country, blues, indie, alt-country, rock and punk.
