It will go down in history as an instant World Cup classic.
England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico was an epic for the ages. To get there, they overcame not only Estadio Azteca’s famous altitude, a delayed kick-off and the roar of 80,000 Mexicans – but they had to do it for 40 plus minutes with 10 men after Jarell Quansah’s red card.
With Mexico striking back through a Raul Jimenez penalty, Thomas Tuchel insisted afterwards referee Alireza Faghani was “just not good enough” and even questioned the nationality of the VAR officials in Mexico City.
“Just not good enough, the referees are just not good enough, the fourth officials are just not good enough, that’s the bottom line,” Tuchel said in his post-match BBC interview.
“Did I see that right that three people at the VAR from South America, in a match like this?
“Is this a clear and obvious error for the [Mexico] penalty? For sure not. VAR gets involved, he didn’t even give the foul, he didn’t even overturn the yellow into a red, they overturn a situation where he doesn’t even give a foul. The referee’s not good enough. Fourth officials are not good enough.”
Here were all the major controversies – and our verdict on whether the officials got them right.
Jarell Quansah’s red card
Quansah became just the fourth England player ever to be dismissed at a World Cup – and his suspension prompts a fresh headache for Tuchel at right-back with Djed Spence nursing an injury and Reece James and Tino Livramento out. Quansah got the ball as he went in two-footed on Jesus Gallardo but his boot was unreasonably high and the VAR was always going to send him off.

Harry Kane’s penalty
Kane did brilliantly to create the opportunity for Anthony Gordon to run into the box and he was just too quick for Raul Rangel as he came rushing out of his goal.

Raul Jimenez’s penalty
Brian Gutierrez was attempting to play the ball during a coming-together with Kane. Because his back was to the Mexico midfielder, it was not even clear Kane had seen him – that was the decision that left Tuchel particularly irate as it was not initially given as a foul. The England captain did make contact but it was fairly minimal (see minute 7:20 in video below).
“That’s not a penalty for me,” former England striker Alan Shearer said on BBC commentary. “He does clip his foot, but not enough to give a penalty away. Goodness me.”
The verdict: Wrong
Joe Hart was among the pundits to scrutinise Tuchel for mentioning the nationalities of the VARs.
“I think he’s got that wrong,” Hart said. “I don’t know why he’s gone so hard on that after such an impressive performance against all odds.”
