ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Rochester Ridgemen are a summer baseball team with a mission that goes beyond the diamond.
For about two months each summer, the team competes while focusing on faith and fellowship. Right on the front of their website, the Ridgemen state another purpose beyond baseball.
It reads: “Providing players an enjoyable summer experience – developing baseball skills – growing deeper in their Christian faith.”
“Honestly what really interested me the most being a Ridgeman. The chapel specifically, really changing your mindset to beyond baseball,” pitcher Antonio Mejia said.
The team incorporates faith into their routine through chapel services and prayer. Players participate in what they call the ‘triple H’s’ — sharing a hero, a hardship and a highlight in their lives.
“It gets you to know others and what they’ve been through in their experiences in Christ. For a lot of guys, a highlight has been finding Jesus,” first baseman and outfielder Jake Gunning said.
The Rochester Ridgemen pray as a team before every game. After games, they invite the opposing team to join them in prayer.
“A way to give God the glory in the game,” pitcher Eli Walker said.
The team uses baseball as a tool to worship Jesus by supporting each other through the ups and downs of the game. Players said the faith-based approach helps them handle the mental challenges of baseball.
“I idolized baseball in the past and it would hurt. I’d go days where a bad outing or a bad appearance would eat away. Ever since I gave my life to Christ, I realized it’s more than that. Not one struggle would define me as a human being,” Mejia said.
“Mentally, at the end of the day, we always say, there’s a means to an end with baseball, but with Jesus, there is no mean to an end. He’s always gonna be there, but the game, it’s always gonna go away at one point,” Gunning said.
Assistant coach Preston Tabor said the team environment allows players to talk about more than just baseball. Players said the Ridgemen are like any other baseball team with dreams of making it big, but without the egos.
“It’s all friendship, brotherhood, and everybody trying to achieve the same goal and that’s try and take this game as far as possible,” Mejia said.
The team lives out their faith on the field through their actions.
“Even if you don’t bring up the Word, sometimes the way you act is a bigger testament,” Walker said.
The Ridgemen’s next home game is July 8 at 5 p.m. at Bishop Kearney.
