A popular suburban fireworks show set for Friday, July 3 will be rescheduled due to a “high probability” of thunderstorms, city officials said.
The City of Aurora sent out the update about 11:30 a.m., hours before their fireworks celebration with music, food trucks and more was set to take place. City officials said the decision was made in coordination with the Aurora Police Department and the Aurora Fire Department following “significant” storms Thursday.
Minutes after Aurora’s announcement, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the much of the Chicago area including parts of Wisconsin and Indiana through 7 p.m. Friday.
“With a high probability of more thunderstorms tonight, per the National Weather Service, combined with substantial portions of the City recovering from storm damage and still without power, the decision was made to reschedule tonight’s fireworks show,” the update said.
The rainout date for the celebration at RiverEdge Park and McCullough Park has been rescheduled for July 10, the city said, with additional details expected to be provided in the coming days.
“As of right now, the City’s Fourth of July Parade, set to take place tomorrow morning at 10 A.M., is still scheduled to occur,” the message said.
The July 3 fireworks show in Aurora was among dozens of celebrations taking place across the Chicago suburbs. Other communities said schedule changes could take place due to weather.
“Weather forecasts indicate there is a possibility of thunderstorms during tomorrow’s event,” the Wilmette Police Department said as part of a public safety notice issued Thursday. “Schedule changes, temporary event suspensions, or a cancellation may be necessary depending on weather conditions. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to ensure everyone’s safety.”
The updates come as the Storm Prediction Center has placed the Chicago area under a “slight” risk of severe weather Friday afternoon and evening, which ranks as level two of five. Any storms that do develop could contain heavy downpours, hail and damaging winds as strong as 60 mph, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
Through 12:15 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the NWS for Boone, Winnebago and Ogle Counties, with storms moving northeast at 55 mph.
“70 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail,” the NWS said. “Hail damage to vehicles expected.”
The NWS also warned of tree and wind damage, especially to mobile homes and roofs.
“Torrential rainfall is occurring with these storms, and may lead to flash flooding,” the NWS warned.
The latest update from the NWS says a “couple rounds of thunderstorms” were anticipated for the Chicago area Friday, with the first batch possible through 3 p.m. There may be a lull in the late afternoon, followed by more chances starting about 6 p.m.
