Two people were arrested in connection to the human remains that were found floating in a downstate Illinois Lake earlier this week, police announced on Thursday.
The announcement comes hours after authorities identified the body as that of 38-year-old Dalewayne Turner of Plainfield and just days after boaters spotted the body while out on Lake Mattoon in Cumberland County.
Illinois State Police said 26-year-old James Adams and 62-year-old Robin Turner were charged with concealment of a homicide and dismembering a human body.
The pair was arrested after they were identified as potential suspects as a part of an intensive investigation started when boaters found what was later identified as Turner’s arm floating in Lake Mattoon on the afternoon of June 28.
Sammy Flynn of Effingham was on a boat with family and friends Sunday when her father asked her to push what he believed were dead fish away from the group using an oar, she told NBC Chicago. She realized what was floating nearby was something much different as she got a closer look.
“I got up closer to it. I was like, that’s not a fish, guys. I’m pretty sure that’s a human arm,” she told NBC Chicago.
Flynn said a friend quickly confirmed what she had seen, and the group immediately called 911.
The group remained at the scene while waiting for authorities, using an oar to keep the remains from drifting away until law enforcement arrived.
ISP took over the investigation after assistance was requested by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators publicly released photographs of distinctive tattoos found on the arm, including one depicting a skeleton holding a Green Bay Packers helmet and another showing an unidentified letter or number, hoping someone would recognize them.
Authorities said additional human remains were found during subsequent searches of the lake.
ISP executed a search warrant on June 1 at Adams and Turner’s residence on the 2400 block of Ruth Fitzgerald Drive in Plainfield and took both into custody. Additional evidence was also recovered at their house.
The pair were still in police custody as of Thursday night and additional charges are expected to be issued.
No additional information was immediately available.
