Van Halen Almost Didn’t Release 1978 Parody Song ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love’ — Then it Became an Enduring Hit ...Saudi Arabia

Van Halen burst onto the music scene with a vengeance. They came out with their first single, “You Really Got Me,” at the start of 1978, followed by “Runnin’ with the Devil” a few months later. Then came an unexpected track that almost didn’t even make it to recording, “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.”

The band’s third single had a unique start. In a 1978 interview with Steve Rosen, Eddie Van Halen explained how the track was actually a parody of sorts, making fun of punk-rock music. He said, “That was actually…we were making fun of punk. Y’know a three-chord song. We were just having a gas, and it actually turned into a good song.”

But some years later, Eddie admitted that he was a bit more hesitant about “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” at first. He told Guitar Player in 1980, “When I wrote ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love’ I thought it was about the lamest song I ever wrote in my life.”

He waited months to present the track to the band, as he recalled, “It took me six months before I even worked up the nerve to show the guys, but kids go nuts for it!”

While the song wasn’t a huge hit initially, its legacy has grown to great heights in the years since. “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” has become a fan favorite and one of the tracks that Van Halen is most known for. In fact, it was one of the few songs from the band’s era with David Lee Roth that subsequent member Sammy Hagar would sing in concert.

Along with the song’s intense beat and fun lyrics, “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” also features a straightforward yet distinct guitar riff that is still talked about decades later as one of Eddie’s best.

The riff even ranked at No. 5 on Total Guitar‘s list of the best guitar riffs of all time. The only songs that ranked above it were Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water,” AC/DC’s “Back in Black,” Ozzy Osbourne‘s “Crazy Train,” and Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.”
