Team India has too much to worry about against Australia, poor record in T20 World Cup doesn’t help ...Middle East

You look at the Indian team, they are a fine-fine unit; a team that can beat any side on their given day. But somehow, that doesn’t apply when it comes to the Australian team. On Sunday, June 28, it is time for IND vs AUS encounter at the Lord’s, and it is the last chance for Harmanpreet Kaur‘s team to seal their spot into the semis, of the Women’s World Cup 2026.

If they fail to register a victory, they will be out of the competition. But let us just set the expectations straight. India are nervous starters against Australia. Despite coming close to beating them a few times, the record is pretty lopsided between the two. In 37 meetings, we have just won 9 times, while the opposition has won a staggering 27 times. In the Women’s T20 World Cups, we have beaten them just once – way back in 2018, and the record is 1-5.

India vs Australia Head to Head

Matches: 37 IND won: 9 AUS won: 27 In T20 World Cups Matches: 6 IND won: 1 AUS won: 5

Team India has a few deficiencies

Middle-order batting: After Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, there isn’t a single batter, who can be trusted with scoring the runs. Harman has 85 runs in 4 innings, followed by 79 from Richa Ghosh, 58 from Jemimah Rodrigues, and 56 from Deepti Sharma. A substantial contribution needs to come there.

Pacers not picking wickets: India has played 4 pacers till now, and only two have been able to pick up wickets. Nandni Sharma has 3 in 3 matches, while Renuka Singh Thakur has 1 in 1. It looks like, India will be better off playing just one pacer, and get a batter/all-rounder in the side.

Dropping too many catches: In the last encounter against Bangladesh, the team dropped four catches in a space of 10 deliveries. Their dropped catches in the entire tournament has gone to 11. IN an IND vs AUS game, this is something they cannot afford to do. If they can minimise errors, they only increase their chances of winning.

Win toss and opt to bat

The Lord’s wicket generally favours the pacers early on. As per various reports, the match is expected to be played on one of the side wickets where the boundary is very short at one end. The 2.5m slope plays a crucial part for sure; but let us just throw that out of the window for a moment.

The crucial India vs Australia Women’s World Cup match on Sunday will be played on one of the side pitches at Lord’s. There is a very short boundary at one end, and I think the slope will play a much bigger role here…#T20WorldCup pic.twitter.com/fznCbKR8q7

No matter how the wicket is, India are poor chasers in the T20 World Cups. Their highest chase ever is only 151, and don’t expect the Aussies to stop at that score. Ellyse Perry (127), Georgia Voll (101), and Beth Mooney (91), all are in good form and in a pressure game, India can’t be suddenly expected to chase 170-180. So Harman, please win the toss and opt to bat.

Changes a must for Team India

There are is an area — the pace department, that the Indian team cannot address at all, and have to do with the available resources only. But they can help themselves in the batting order and their catching. Firstly, they need to get rid of Yastika Bhatia from the XI, and get in Bharti Fulmali, who has a WPL strike rate of 149. And she needs to bat at no. 5 or no. 6 depending on the sitaution.

The no. 3 position should only be reserved for Jemimah Rodrigues. If she strikes form, she would be difficult to manage. She anyways likes batting against the Aussies — as was evident in her semis ton last year, in the World Cup 2025. Secondly, a brave decision needs to come as far as Harman is concerned.

If she is only looking to anchor the innings, she should come down at no. 5. Instead Richa Ghosh should come in at no. 4, when the side is losing momentum. In the IND vs PAK match, the side went down from 109/2 in 13.5 overs to 123/5 in 16.2 overs. Against Netherlands too where we scored 209, the side lost wickets in a cluster and the score went from 161/1 in 15.5 overs to 168/4 in 17.1 overs.

It was much more apparent in SA match where the score went from 54/1 in 5.4 overs to 83/4 in 10.2 overs. So, all in all, a hitter like Richa is much-needed in that middle-order, where she can really take charge of the middle overs, where somehow the runs are hard to come by.
