Getting Miz’d, Shaw’s Future, Prospect Trade Values, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Good morning, Bleacher Nation.

Besides a Seiya Suzuki home run (and four walks), the Cubs got the Jacob Misiorowski experience last night in Milwaukee. It stinks to be as resigned to that outcome as I am, but he’s the best on the planet right now at what he does, and no one else (Paul Skenes?) even feels that close to him.

Pete Crow-Armstrong’s remarkable month of June has come with a new mind-boggling stat nearly every day it seems, and with each Misiorowski start, it feels impossible to be on social media or watching MLB Network without seeing a new mind-boggling stat from him. These two are a couple of the game’s best young players, so seeing the Miz hit 105.5mph last night and PCA foul it off was quite a display.

— Sarah Langs (@SlangsOnSports) June 27, 2026 Between the at-bats against the Miz and this home run robbery (technically, he did still rob the home run, right?), it was a night of could’ve beens for the Cubs and PCA. (PCA did, however, extend his on-base streak to 28 games with a walk in the 8th.)

— Cubs Zone (@CubsZone) June 27, 2026 Seiya Suzuki’s home run off Misiorowski came in the 5th inning on a 90mph slider. Seiya had worked the count full and launched a beauty of an opposite field shot, 103.8mph and 409 feet. It was his second career home run against the Miz, making him the ONLY player with multiple homers off the young fireballer. The homer left me with two thoughts. 1) Perhaps this is the AB that gets Seiya hot like we’ve seen him before? 2) Stringing together a couple of walks and running into a home run basically feels like the only (somewhat) realistic way to beat the Miz.

— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) June 27, 2026 Matt Shaw continues to prove just how good a ballplayer he is with this catch last night. He’s hitting .244/.312/.417 in 54 games this season, which are all better slash numbers than his rookie season, and he’s doing it in a completely different role. Perhaps the hardest role (besides traditional pinch hitter) there is to play in the sport. I understand why his name continues to pop up in trade rumors, but I’ll take any “prospect hugger” arrows and say I hope the Cubs keep him.

— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) June 27, 2026 Michael: I actually believe in Matt Shaw more today than I did last season, both offensively and defensively (that wasn’t even his only good defensive play last night). HOWEVER, I think there probably is a scenario in which trading him makes sense, and that’s for the equivalent pitcher version of Shaw on some other team. I don’t know if that actually even exists (would the Red Sox even move Connelly Early or Payton Tolle anymore? I’m not so sure). But if it does, that’s where you have to think about it. The lack of pitching right now might be an injury problem. But next year, it’s an injury problem AND a … a bunch of guys left in free agency problem. Can’t get it all done in the offseason. Just not possible. Speaking of prospects and trades, there are a couple of dudes at Triple-A Iowa putting up numbers who were both at different times considered to be valued prospects/trade candidates. Their names are Kevin Alcantara and Jonathon Long. As you can watch below, Alcantara just had his second four-hit game of the week, raising his slash line with the I-Cubs to .275/.370/.585. He has 17 home runs and an OPS of .955. Yes, some of the prospect shine has worn off the 23-year-old (particularly with the strikeout concerns), but he still hasn’t gotten an opportunity to play regularly in the bigs, so I believe he can still help the Cubs get something useful in return at the trade deadline if Jed is seriously buying. Long, meanwhile, went 3-for-5 last night with six RBI, raising his slash line to .263/.345/.401. He’s not slugging as much as Alcantara, but the defense at first is above average, and he’s legitimized his versatility in the outfield corners over the past season and a half in Des Moines. For as much understandable anxiety there is about Pedro Ramirez, Matt Shaw, Jefferson Rojas, Josiah Hartshorn, Caleb Wing, or Jaxon Wiggins being traded, I don’t think it’s inaccurate to say Alcantara and Long are more than throw-ins to make a useful trade happen at the deadline.

— Iowa Cubs (@IowaCubs) June 27, 2026 David Peterson is scheduled to make his Cubs debut this evening against the Brewers, and I share in his excitement. In case you missed it, Michael had the initial story of the Cubs’ trade for the former Mets starter, and Brett had additional thoughts a day later, so give those a read before tonight’s game if you haven’t already. Along with the more tangible reasons Michael and Brett point out in their stories, I genuinely wonder if getting out of the mess that is the Mets right now can prove helpful for Peterson.
