While the Chicago area has grown used to cooler weather in recent days, that’s about to change, with dangerous heat on the way as temperatures climb into the 90s and heat index values top 100 degrees.
With the hottest weather of the year so far expected, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said it’ll be time to fire up the air conditioning, likely beginning Sunday and then continuing for much of the week.
Before the heat moves in later this weekend, expect a pleasant start to the day with readings in the low 60s and clouds throughout the morning.
Clouds will begin to break up in the afternoon, making way more sunshine, as winds come off the lake.
Highs will rise into the mid-70s, with winds out of the northeast at six to 12 miles per hour in the evening. If you’re going to be out and about, make sure you have a sweater or sweatshirt – it may be a bit chilly.
Sunday will begin on a quiet note, with temperatures sitting in the mid-60s.
A bit more sunshine and a light southerly breeze off the lake are expected, helping maintain comfortable conditions.
Anyone attending Sunday’s Pride Parade will want to find some shade, with highs expected to climb into the mid-80s away from Lake Michigan. Humidity will also likely increase, so you’ll start to feel the hotter weather a bit as Sunday evening nears.
Then, the heat ramps up.
Monday will likely encounter highs anywhere between 91 and 95 degrees, with heat index values approaching 100 degrees. It’ll be even hotter on Tuesday, with highs in the mid-to-upper 90s and heat indices potentially reaching 106 degrees.
Conditions grow more intense by midweek.
Wednesday will bring highs in the mid-to-upper 80s, accompanied by heat index values potentially reaching 108 degrees. It’ll be a similar story on Thursday as heat indices could top out around 110 degrees.
Under such conditions, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said high humidity and dew point values will hinder how effectively sweat can evaporate, making it harder for the body to cool down.
A slight dip in temperatures arrives on Friday, with a chance of rain arriving later in the day.
A few thunderstorms are possible as fireworks displays get underway, followed by additional chances for rain on Saturday – the Fourth of July – and Sunday.
But the hope is conditions will improve in time for a festive holiday weekend.
