How long heatwave will last as UK breaks June temperature record ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

This week’s heatwave has already seen record-breaking temperatures, with forecasters warning they could get even higher in the coming days as the UK continues to experience hot and humid conditions.

Cardiff experienced 23.5°C overnight, provisionally making it the hottest June night and the highest June minimum temperature on record. On Wednesday, daytime temperatures reached 36.1°C in Gosport, Hampshire – breaking the previous June record from the summer of 1976, the Met Office said.

The Met Office extended its red warning for extreme heat, previously set to end Thursday night, until 9pm on Friday for London and parts of south-east England.

The alert means that “population-wide adverse health effects”, power losses and travel delays should be expected, and that “substantial changes” to daily routines are required.

How much hotter will it get?

The June temperature record could be broken again as the Met Office forecasts temperatures in parts of England to reach 38°C on Thursday and Friday.

If 38°C is recorded on Thursday or Friday, they will become one of the top five hottest days ever recorded and hotter than any day of the 20th century. Currently, the UK’s highest temperature is 40.3°C, recorded in Coningsby, Lincolnshire, in July 2022.

Temperatures will be verified at the end of the heatwave to confirm if new national records have been set.

The Met Office extended amber heat warnings until Friday for much of England, and for parts of east and south-east England on Saturday. But by then, areas further west are expected to see the highest temperatures relent.

The UK Health Security Agency also issued red heat health alerts for the east of England, East Midlands, London, the south-east, the south-west and the West Midlands, and amber heat health alerts for the north-east, north-west, and Yorkshire and the Humber.

The alerts, which are in place until 11pm on Friday, warn of an “increased risk to life across the whole population, with significant impacts on older people” and that “adverse temperatures are likely to impact on the health and wellbeing of the population”.

When will the heatwave end?

The extreme heat is set to last in parts of the country over the weekend.

The far south-east will retain the warmth the longest, though there should be a climb-down in figures by Saturday, with peaks around 32°C probable, the Met Office said.

“Next week is likely to see a change to more of a westerly influence on the UK’s weather, with a return to more average temperatures for the time of year and a mixture of winds and rain, particularly for those in the north-west,” it said.

How likely are thunderstorms?

The warm weather means there is a chance of thunderstorms.

A yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for the south-west until Thursday evening. Another has been issued for parts of north-west Scotland until Saturday, with flooding and gusty winds forecast.
