A freight train derailment and loss of power forced a suspension of South Shore Line train service for the rest of the evening late Wednesday night, officials announced.
Around 9:40 p.m., a reported freight train derailment and power loss near East Chicago and Gary Metro prompted a shutdown of train service on the South Shore Line, according to a service update.
“All remaining South Shore Line train service will be suspended today, June 24,” the update said.
There is a potential the Thursday morning commute could be impacted as well.
“Passengers are encouraged to find alternate transportation to/from Chicago for the remainder of this evening and potentially Thursday morning rush hour commute,” officials said in a post on social media.
The incident follows hours of strong storms that hammered northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana throughout the afternoon and evening that left damage across the region.
