Hundreds of residents of an Illinois town were forced to evacuate their homes after an explosion led to a “gas emergency,” authorities said.
The incident happened around 6 a.m. Monday in Dixon, Illinois, southwest of Rockford, where authorities said they were called to the 1500 block of Estates Road in the Chateau Estates community for an explosion in a “manufactured home.”
One person inside the home at the time suffered “significant injuries” and was hospitalized, but details on their condition were not immediately released.
In wake of the explosion, emergency personnel began evacuating the entire community “due to elevated gas levels continuing to exist within the park.” That includes 106 homes, with anywhere from 300 to 400 residents.
An emergency shelter was set up at Reagan Middle School in Dixon.
“Residents and members of the public are asked to avoid the Chateau Estates area to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the scene,” police said in a release.
Anchor Road from Route 38 to Route 52 was “closed until further notice.”
The cause of the explosion remained under investigation as of late Monday morning, but Nicor Gas was at the scene assisting, police said.
Authorities anticipate residents being allowed to return to their homes Monday afternoon, depending on the circumstances.
“While things could change, Nicor expects residents will be able to return to their homes late this afternoon,” police said in a recent update. “The Nicor team will need to light the gas at each individual home, so a resident will need to be home for them to complete this work.”
