President Donald Trump weighed in on the violent holiday weekend in Chicago following several incidents, including a mass shooting in the Princeton Park neighborhood on the city’s South Side late Friday.
At least 13 people were injured when two gunmen opened fire from a vehicle at around 11 p.m., authorities said.
The wave of shootings captured Trump’s attention, with the president questioning why Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker hasn’t asked for his assistance.
“Lots of killing going on in Chicago. 22 people shot, at least 4 dead,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help? I could make Chicago a safe city in ONE MONTH. In ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!! D.C. went from one of the worst to one of the safest cities in the U.S.”
During past periods of violence, Pritzker insisted federal intervention wasn’t necessary. NBC Chicago reached out to Pritzker’s office for a response to Trump’s comments but hadn’t received one as of late Sunday.
Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the Princeton Park mass shooting, calling it a “horrific act of violence.”
“I am heartbroken by the violence in Princeton Park last night,” he said in a social media post on Saturday, in part. “What should have been a night of celebration and community reflection for Juneteenth was shattered by a horrific act of violence. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones…”
Tio Hardiman, the president of The Violence Interrupters, a community violence intervention group, said it’s tragic to see people losing their lives on a regular basis.
He explained his group has helped prevent more than 30 shootings this year.
“You have guys in prison right now serving life sentences who wish they could turn back time,” Hardiman said. “Many would tell young people, ‘I should not have done what I did.’”
By Sunday afternoon, the number of people shot had surpassed 37, with at least seven of those killed.
Hardiman said the solution to Chicago’s gun violence lies in a partnership between the city and nonprofit organizations.
“The only thing coming out of the streets is jails, death and institutions — it’s not worth it,” he said.
