ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Friends and family held a balloon release to honor 14-year-old Zah’nia Barr, nearly a week after she was shot and killed in the City of Rochester.
Police say Barr was shot after a large crowd gathered near North Clinton Avenue and Morrill Street, where police later found her body. The balloon release happened not far from that exact spot.
Loved ones react
“Look at that smile. That’s her. She’s a beautiful, beautiful baby. She was a very kind little girl,” Darryl Nicholson said.
Nicholson is Barr’s godfather but says she felt like his own blood. Hearing about her murder was heartbreaking.
“I was a little upset with my baby for a minute, but then I had realized that it wasn’t her fault. She didn’t do anything wrong. We’ve all been teenagers before, you know. She did what teenagers do. And she did not think that she would leave her home and not be back in it that night,” Nicholson said.
Father calls for change
Nicholson was far from the only one emotional at the balloon release. News10NBC spoke with Barr’s brother, sisters and father about what went through their minds when they heard the news.
“Zahnia’s mom called him about 5:20 screaming, crying and told me to come over to the house. Once I got to her house, I seen detectives in which my heart dropped because I basically already knew that that was my daughter,” said Barr’s father, Chazeman Allen Sr.
Allen Sr. says the community needs to change to prevent this from happening in the future.
“The people. The community…It’s just sad. Just sad that kids can’t come outside and play without knowing that something could happen to them,” Allen Sr. said.
“She had a future and it was taken,” Nicholson said.
When asked what he would say to the person who took it, Nicholson said, “Come on and turn yourself in man. Cause now you’re living like a rat.”
No arrests yet
Police have not provided any updates on either shooting over the weekend. Barr was just one of 10 people shot in the northeast part of the city last weekend, and a 35-year-old woman also lost her life.
