England vs New Zealand player ratings as nightmare debutant scores 3/10 ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

New Zealand subjected England to a humiliating 253-run defeat at The Oval to set up a series decider at Trent Bridge next week.

The hosts, with five changes from the first Test, including three debutants and an interim captain in Joe Root, were always up against it in this second Test after Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were stood down following their curfew-busting night out. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith was also given the Test off after the birth of his second child, while seamer Ollie Robinson, man of the match at Lord’s, was injured.

Still, this was a humbling loss. Set a world-record 463 to win, England started the final day 281 short of that target with five wickets remaining. They lasted just 48 minutes, with a rampant Matt Henry taking all five wickets needed to finish the match with 11 overall.

Here’s how England’s players rated after a sixth defeat in eight Tests for the under-pressure Bazballers.

Ben Duckett – 3

At his fluent best before he was run out for 36 in first innings. Looked anything but in tortured second-innings knock of nine.

Emilio Gay – 6

Played well for his first-innings half-century in only his second Test. Poor shot to get out early in the run chase.

Jacob Bethell – 4

Has just 29 runs in four innings since returning from the Indian Premier League. At least his part-time spin took four wickets.

Joe Root – 7

Captaincy wasn’t great but showed his enduring class with the bat, becoming only the second man in history to pass 14,000 Test runs during his defiant 77 in the forlorn chase.

Harry Brook – 6

Scored his fastest Test half-century – off 33 balls – during the chase but again failed to kick on. First-innings 24.

James Rew – 3

Test debut came too soon for the 22-year-old. Struggled with the bat, scoring 39 runs, and had a nightmare behind the stumps, including two costly drops.

Jordan Cox – 5

Another debutant. Made 27 first up and looked good during a fighting final-day 25. But by then the game was up.

Jofra Archer – 6

Five wickets in his first Test since January and deserved more given some of his scintillating spells. Will get better as summer goes on.

Matthew Fisher – 4

Only two of his five wickets were top-six batters and struggled to convince he is a genuine Test-class bowler.

Josh Tongue – 5

Dropped off from his performances in Australia last winter and at Lord’s earlier this month. Match figures of three for 161.

Sonny Baker – 5

Debutant’s enthusiasm cannot be faulted. Identical match figures to Tongue. Deserves another chance in a more settled team.
