Whether it’s to help pay their tuition, earn some spending money or just keep themselves busy, many students are working summer jobs. This year, some UA students are doing unconventional work as new technology and trends shape employment possibilities.
Many of these modern jobs appeal to students because they make it easy to start working. Finn Montague, a sophomore majoring in anthropology, is working as a delivery driver for Uber Eats.
“I was searching for a job because I need to get some money over the summer, but a lot of in-person places didn’t hire me. Apparently, Uber Eats is always hiring, and you don’t really have to apply,” Montague said. “I get to choose how much I work. Typically, I try to work two hours a day, maybe more. ”
Montague doesn’t have a workplace or co-workers, so he has to rely upon having his own car. He said he’s lucky to have an efficient car, because otherwise he might lose money on deliveries by paying for gas.
“The biggest upside is that I get to drive my own car, play my own music and wear whatever I want,” Montague said. “The biggest downside is probably forcing myself to go out and work. The first few weeks I was doing it, I wasn’t consistently doing two hours a day, but I’ve been able to hold myself more responsible since starting.”
Alexander Demuth, a sophomore majoring in political science, is working a more traditional summer job, but it has a new twist. He’s working at his local movie theater but is also helping with the theater’s social media presence.
“Before I came back for the summer, we started a TikTok and Instagram channel for the cinema, and now that I’m back, me and a couple of the other employees are creating videos for those channels,” Demuth said. “So far I’ve come up with a couple of the ideas for the videos, but I’ve mostly been an actor in the videos.”
Working on these videos has become a new responsibility for Demuth and his co-workers. Demuth said they’ve had significant success, garnering thousands of views online.
“It’s very different than what I expected from the job. I’ve worked at this movie theater for two and a half years now, and this is new,” he said. “I think it’s driving people to come to the theater more.”
Doing new things for work can be challenging, but it also gives students an opportunity to try new things outside of college.
Hudson Winslett, a sophomore mechanical engineering and economics major, is working as an intern for an engineering consulting firm. Through this internship, he said he’s been able to explore several emerging technologies.
“I sort of do all sorts of jobs there. I’m the person who mows the grass, but I’m also the person who is assembling an app for the storage system,” Winslett said.
Winslett has also helped set up a metallography art show, worked on wiring diagrams involved in the Artemis project and made 3D printing diagrams. He said one of the reasons he went to the University is to figure out exactly what he wanted to do for a career, and this job has helped him explore his options.
“The internship has given me a good look into all sorts of engineering, looking at both mechanics, structures and the materials themselves,” Winslett said. “It’s also given me a good look into science and production, and I can’t think of another company where I would have been able to do something like the art show.”
Gaining new experiences and skills seems to be common for students with unconventional summer jobs. Demuth said working on the videos for his theater has helped him get more accustomed to using social media professionally.
“I’m glad it’s part of my job. I’m not the most social media literate person around, so it’s nice to have some more experience with it,” Demuth said. “It’s becoming a lot more common on the job applications that I see.”
