University of Utah head swimming & diving coach Jonas Persson has signed a contract extension that would keep him with the Utes through the 2031 season. That adds four years, and a significant pay increase, to the original five year agreement that was due to expire in 2027.

Salary Increase

Persson’s prior contract paid him a base salary of $140,000 each year. The extension will raise that base starting with the 2026-2027 fiscal year and escalate in each year of the agreement.

FY27 – $156,678 FY28 – $162,945 FY29 – $169,463 FY30 – $176,242 FY31 – $183,291

The total base salary for the five year term of the original deal was $700,000, and the new base salary for the five year term of the extension totals $848,619. That is a 21% total increase in value.

Bonus Structure Update

The contract also updates Persson’s bonus structure and that of his assistants. While the scale of the bonuses haven’t changed substantially, the targets have.

Previously, bonuses were based on rankings in the CSCAA dual meet poll, which is voted on by collegiate coaches, and required a top 18 ranking to clear the initial threshold for a bonus. That ranking has now been lowered and based on NCAA Championship finishes.

Persson’s prior contract also rewarded finishes at the Pac-12 Championships; Utah joined the Big 12 Conference two years ago, and his new agreement reflects rewards for similar finishes at the Big 12 Championship meet.

About Persson and the Program

Persson was promoted to head coach in 2022 after spending three years as an associate head coach. Utah has set 27 program records and seen 13 All-Americans in his time leading the program.

The Utah men were represented by two swimmers and a diver at last year’s NCAA Championship meet, with senior diver Elias Petersen scoring all 17 of the program’s points for a 34th-place finish. The team has scored at the NCAA Championships 31 times in history, including at the last six meets, and their best-ever finish was 10th in 2018.

The Utah women had two qualifiers, both divers, at last year’s NCAA Championship meet, and didn’t score any points. They last scored at the 2024 NCAA Championships, which was also the highest-ever finish for the program at 25th.

“Jonas has done a tremendous job executing the strategy and vision he had for elevating our swimming and diving program when he was hired four years ago, and I’m thrilled to extend his contract,” Director of Athletics Mark Harlan said. “The student-athletes in his program epitomize the qualities that define our department’s culture to achieve excellence in the classroom, competition and community. I look forward to the continued growth and success of our men’s and women’s swimming and diving program for years to come under his leadership.”

Utah has been on the cutting edge of new investment models in collegiate athletics. After bringing in a private equity partner, the school laid off a number of athletics department employees. While the layoffs went viral on social media as a cautionary tale about how private equity operates, Harlan said that the layoffs were the first step in transitioning units to the new entity Crimson Brand Partners.

“The University has begun the process of transitioning select units of some University operations to the new company,” a spokesperson told the Salt Lake Tribune. “The first step of that process requires the discontinuation of the individual positions in those units through a reduction in force (RIF), to be followed by CBP’s hiring process.”

“All impacted employees will have an opportunity to interview for a similar position with CBP,” the spokesperson said.
