Rohit looked all over the place in Mohali, where he started the preparations for the India vs Afghanistan ODI series. His performance in Dharamshala wasn’t exceptional. Rohit batted alongside Shubman Gill in one net. He faced Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav and Kuldeep Yadav. The fast bowler was tested with a short-ball barrage from the tallest pacers – Prasidh and Gurnoor – and didn’t look convincing.
India’s spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule didn’t entertain any discussion around the 39-year-old’s fitness and explained why Rohit’s an invaluable addition to the team, especially in Virat Kohli‘s absence. Bahutule highlighted how Rohit’s leadership helps Gill and other members of the squad.
“Rohit Sharma is definitely an experienced player. He is a champion cricketer and someone who adds immense value to this team, not only with his batting but also through his leadership qualities, which rub off on all the boys, including Shubman,” Bahutule told reporters. “Having him in this side is very, very important. He understands each game and knows what is expected of him and from the team. He looks forward to every match, and the amount of work he puts in is as if he has just started playing,” he added.
Kuldeep Yadav to play?
The conditions in Lucknow will be hot and dry. Unlike Dharamshala, spinners will most likely come into play at the Ekana Cricket Stadium with a mixed-soil pitch to be served. Bahutule didn’t rule out the possibility of Kuldeep Yadav coming in for Prasidh Krishna or Arshdeep Singh, but any change looks unlikely.

“We still have to have a look at the pitch and then decide what our combination is going to be. Definitely different conditions compared to Dharamsala – much hotter – but still a decision has to be taken in terms of how we go ahead,” Bahutule said.
