Texas took down Alabama 14-2 Monday to put an end to the Crimson Tide’s College World Series run and 2026 season.

“It was really special, and I’m fortunate to get to be a part of it, and they took me along for a heck of a ride,” head coach Rob Vaughn said. “So, [I will] forever [be] indebted to the 2026 Alabama baseball team. And I challenge those young pups up there, man, the foundation has been laid, it’s their job to get us back. It ain’t gonna be 27 years again, I can promise you that. So really grateful, yeah, really grateful for this group.”

Shortstop Justin Lebron sent a one-out base hit right back up the middle, then stole second base in the top half of the first inning. However, catcher Brady Neal and third baseman Jason Torres went down on strikes to strand Lebron on second base.

The Longhorns wasted no time getting the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning. Ethan Mendoza sent an RBI double down the third base and Adrian Rodriguez followed with a two-run double down the first base line to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

The Crimson Tide got one of the runs right back in the top of the second inning thanks to an RBI bloop single from first baseman Luke Vaughn.

The Longhorns quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning with two-out RBI singles from Anthony Pack Jr. and Mendoza to make it a 5-1 game. Rodriguez followed with a two-run triple to extend the lead to 7-1.

Left-hander Matthew Heiberger replaced Crimson Tide starting pitcher and fellow left-hander Zane Adams on the mound and picked up the final out of the second inning, in what will most likely be Adams’s final collegiate start, with him heading to the MLB draft in July. Adams tossed 1.2 innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs, walking three and striking out two on 63 pitches.

After the shortest start of Adams’ college career, he confirmed postgame that he was tipping his pitches.

“I was, if you go back and look, obviously, like you could tell,” Adams said. “But I mean, I don’t know if that played a part in the game or what. That’s the first time I’ve heard of it.”

Heiberger remained in the game for the bottom of the third and worked a 1-2-3 inning thanks to a beautiful diving play from Vaughn at first base. In the top of the fourth inning, designated hitter John Lemm crushed a solo shot to right-center field, cutting the deficit to 7-2.

Heiberger worked scoreless fourth and fifth innings to keep the Crimson Tide’s deficit at five runs. Heiberger came back out for the bottom of the sixth inning and allowed Pack to hit a two-run shot to extend the Longhorns’ lead to 9-2. Hagan Banks replaced Heiberger and surndered a two-run home run to Rodriguez, making it 11-2. With that home run, Rodriguez hit for the third-ever cycle in CWS history.

Banks stayed in the game for the bottom of the seventh and picked up the first two outs. Freshman Myles Upchurch then came in for his first career relief appearance.

Upchurch came back out for the bottom of the eighth inning and allowed three more runs on a RBI single from Pack, a RBI groundout from Callum Early and a RBI double from Rodriguez to make it 14-2.

The Crimson Tide went three up, three down in the top of the ninth inning to end the ballgame and put an end to its season.

Now the Crimson Tide will turn its attention toward the transfer portal, which opened June 1 and closes June 30. The Crimson Tide has already received the commitment of infielder Cooper Neville from Dallas Baptist and right-handed pitcher Garrett Lambert from Mercer.

The Crimson Tide team will look a whole lot different in 2027 as Banks, Lebron, center fielder Bryce Fowler, Torres, Adams, starter Tyler Fay, Neal, Lemm and second baseman Brennan Holt and many more players’ college careers have come to an end.

“It means everything to me,” Banks said of his last college appearance. “The town of Tuscaloosa has meant everything to my family, and they’ve given me everything and more, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
