A total of 17 tornadoes and counting touched down in the Chicago area during Thursday’s severe weather outbreak, with confirmed tornadoes spanning the suburbs, northwest Indiana and even near the city itself.
According to the National Weather Service, crews confirmed the number of tornadoes as of Sunday, with crews continuing to assess damage this week as more severe weather chances move in.
“Several tornadoes, including multiple strong to intense tornadoes, occurred across parts of northern and central Illinois and northwest Indiana during the late afternoon and evening of Thursday, June 11th,” the NWS said in a post Sunday night. “Thus far, at least 17 tornadoes have been confirmed in the NWS Chicago area of responsibility.”
The tornadoes that touched down range in intensite from EF-0 to EF-3. EF-3 tornadoes contain wind speeds anywhere from 136 to 165 mph, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said. Only 2.3 percent of all tornadoes reach that intensity.
In addition to the tornadoes, destructive straight-line winds of up to 80 mph led to major damage across parts of the Chicago area and south of the Kankakee River. From Berwyn to McKinley Park, giant trees were uprooted, with roofs blown off buildings. In far northern Illinois, heavy rainfall led to flooding, the NWS said.
Full assessments of the storm was still preliminary, the NWS said. Other areas of potential tornado damage was expected to be conducted this week.
As of 6 p.m. Sunday, the following tornadoes have been confirmed in the Chicago area, including northwest Indiana
Wenona/Osage Township, IL EF-1 Streator, IL EF-3 Graymont to Dwight, IL EF-1 Bartlett, IL EF-1 St. John to Schererville, IN EF-0 Merrillville to Hobart, IN EF-2 Gibson City to Elliott, IL EF-0 Paxton/Loda, IL EF-1 Ludlow, IL EF-1 Cedar Lake, IN EF-0 Schneider to Hebron, IN EF-0 Hebron to Kouts, IN EF-3 Naperville to Lisle, IL EF-0 Hickory Hills to Midway Airport EF-2 At least two EF-0 tornadoes across a corridor from Watseka, IL to west of Rensselaer, IN Boswell, IN EF-1Tornado intensity scale
The enhanced Fujita Scale rating is based on estimated wind speeds and related damage, according to NWS.
An EF-0 level tornado has 3 second gust between 65 to 85 mph. An EF-1 level tornado has a 3 second gust between 86 to 110 mph. An EF-2 level tornado has a 3 second gust between 111 and 135, and an EF-3 level between 136 and 165 mph. A 3 second gust between 166 to 200 mph ranks the tornado at EF-4 and above 200 mph ranks the highest at an EF-5.
According to NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, Illinois leads the country in confirmed tornadoes for 2026, with 141 confirmed tornadoes.
More severe weather chances
While Monday in the Chicago area will be sunny and dry, more severe weather chances will “move right back in” starting Tuesday, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
The first chance for rain comes Tuesday morning, NBC 5 Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, with spotty showers possible. By afternoon, some isolated storms could form, though not all areas will see them.
The strongest storms, between about 2 to 7 p.m., could contain heavy rain, damaging wind and large hail.
“The greatest coverage of storms will be generally east of the I-39 corridor,” the National Weather Service said in a post on X.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, much of the Chicago area Tuesday will be at a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one of five.
Wednesday brings a greater chance for strong to severe storms to the entire Chicago area, Roman said, with rain and storms starting as early as mid to late morning.
“All weather hazards will be at play, including tornadoes,” Roman said, especially in the afternoon and evening hours.
Wednesday, the Storm Prediction Center placed Chicago and counties to the north and west at a “slight” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two. Counties to the far south will be at an “enhanced” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level three.
“The strongest activity will remain in central Illinois,” Roman said. “We’ll have to watch the timing of this. We’ll also have to watch the placement.”
