Hate crime charges were filed against a suburban Plainfield man who allegedly used a racial slur against a child in Naperville, prosecutors revealed Monday.
The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said Jeffrey Feigenbaum, 29, pushed a 9-year-old boy and threw his bike during a dispute this past weekend. On Saturday, Naperville police responded to a disturbance along West Jefferson Avenue near South Birchwood Drive regarding a man who allegedly called a boy the “n-word.”
Authorities said the child was building a fort down the street with other children when a girl, identified as the daughter of Feigenbaum’s girlfriend, damaged the fort.
Prosecutors said the boy went to the girl’s home and knocked on the door. Feigenbaum exited the residence and is then accused of yelling a racial slur, pushing the boy and throwing the child’s bike as he ran away.
“The allegations against Mr. Feigenbaum are very disturbing,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release, in part. “Hate crimes have no place in a civilized society. DuPage County is comprised of dozens of extremely welcoming and diverse communities and the type of behavior alleged in this case will not be tolerated…”
Feigenbaum’s next court appearance has been scheduled for July 13.
