A community is mourning after a woman was struck and killed by a train while riding her bicycle in suburban Grayslake.
According to police, 60-year-old Virginia Girmscheid was riding her bike on Tuesday evening at approximately 8:12 p.m. when she was struck by a passing CN freight train near the intersection of North Lake and Hillside Avenue.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities and to Metra officials.
According to an obituary published by family, Girmscheid served as the CFO of Stepping Stones Network until the time of her passing. The organization is dedicated to combatting sex trafficking, with its website describing the group’s work as “preventing sexual exploitation and providing comprehensive, restorative care to survivors.”
In lieu of flowers, her family asked for donations to Samaritan’s Purse, an organization dedicated to providing emergency aid to victims of natural disasters, or to Compassion International, which aims to help children who are living in poverty.
