The England team has had some of their training equipment stolen just days ahead of their opening fixture at the World Cup.

Police are investigating the theft of team equipment which occurred ahead of England’s arrival at their Kansas City base, the Football Association has confirmed.

England are due to land in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday afternoon and it was expected their training equipment would be in place ahead of their arrival.

Kit stolen during transport

It is believed the equipment was stolen during its transportation from England’s pre-tournament base in southern Florida to Missouri.

The team is now dealing with an unexpected headache, with boots and balls reported to have been among the items discovered stolen, as well as other key training gear.

It is not known how the theft may affect Thomas Tuchel’s preparations for the squad’s World Cup opener this week.

The FA has confirmed that an incident has occurred but was unable to provide further information given it is now a police matter.

Arrested made

It is understood two people have been arrested in connection with the investigation.

The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department told Daily Mail Sport: “We are investigating a possible theft of equipment from a team vehicle that arrived in Kansas City with items missing this evening. The investigation is ongoing.”

The exact scale of the theft has not been confirmed, but it is understood to be significant and affect some of the squad’s top talent.

England are due to train at Swope Soccer Village for the first time at 5pm local time (11pm GMT) on Saturday.

Their first full training day will take place on Sunday.

Tuchel’s men open their World Cup campaign against Croatia on Wednesday at 4pm local time (9pm BST) in Dallas, before completing Group L against Ghana and Panama.

It comes after they won 3-0 against Costa Rica in their final friendly ahead of the international tournament.

Declan Rice secured an early goal, while second-half goals came from Anthony Gordon’s penalty 68 minutes in, and Ollie Watkins in the 87th minute.

Kansas City is also a base for Argentina, the Netherlands and Algeria. The city will host six World Cup matches, including a quarter-final on 11 July.

Tight security measures have been put in place in and around the The Inn at Meadowbrook hotel, a 54-room hotel in Prairie Village that will exclusively host the England team.

The measures include increased armed police presence and the erection of concrete anti-terrorism barriers.
