Suzuki and Bregman Come Through, Unreviewable Boot, Kelly, PCA, Steele, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

It’s a good day to start a new series and line up a win, eh?

Seiya Suzuki’s grand slam will be remembered (well, I mean, hopefully) as a breakthrough moment, but it was almost as good to see Alex Bregman get into one with his homer. Funny thing about that, Harold Reynolds kinda called it live:

Harold Reynolds talks about the swing adjustments he's wanted to see from Alex Bregman, right as Bregman does that and homers. Greg Amsinger: "Unbelievable! That's incredible! You showed us what to look for! He literally did it! And he went yard!" ⚾️?️pic.twitter.com/Gi2B7vQc5b t.co/JBiGmKUiA2

— Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) June 12, 2026 “Happy to contribute to help our team win a baseball game,” Bregman said, per the Tribune. “We have maybe three guys playing to their potential, so we’ve got a lot of work to do, and we’ve got to be better. We’re way better of a ball club than we’ve shown, so got to look in the mirror and figure out a way to get it done on the field, and that’s my impression, we’ve got to play better. Today was a good step in the right direction, but win tomorrow and it’s a winning streak.” Bregman says a lot of guys are working on things right now and hopes that it could come together for multiple guys at the same time:

— Elise Menaker (@EliseMenaker) June 11, 2026 Gonna get e-punched in the head for saying it, but it’s just a factoid … Over the last month, Alex Bregman has been an above-league-average hitter (.257/.331/.372/101 wRC+). As for Suzuki, his big scream and pump as he approached first showed you the relief he felt in finally coming through. “I felt like I haven’t been able to help out our pitchers, they’re pitching in tough situations,” Suzuki said through interpreter Edwin Stanberry, per the Tribune. “There’s more sort of frustration that I had towards myself, not hitting in those opportunities, and I was finally able to get that hit.” The full play and sequence that got Craig Counsell booted yesterday:

Umpires blew a foul ball call and gifted the Rockies a double play.Moisés Ballesteros fouled a ball off his leg and didn't run to first since he assumed the play was dead. The play was not reviewable and rookie umpire Louie Krupa ejected Cubs manager Craig Counsell when he… pic.twitter.com/miOZM0nJiV

— Umpire Auditor (@UmpireAuditor) June 12, 2026 In the end, sure seems like a play that should be reviewable, no? I understand why it’s difficult to review one that was called a foul ball off a player’s leg but ultimately DIDN’T hit the leg (who gets placed where? Is the batter just out if he didn’t run?), but when the challenge is that it was a foul ball, that just seems like a very easy review process. Going back to April 23, Carson Kelly was hitting just .250/.301/.271/66 wRC+ coming into yesterday, and he hadn’t homered since April 18. So for as much attention as Seiya Suzuki and Alex Bregman’s blasts understandably get, that was a big one for Kelly, too. I knew PCA’s catch yesterday was gonna be a five-star – you could tell he covered so much ground:

Numbers are in for this PCA grab: 15% catch probability, jump of 9.9 (!) feet above average. If that number holds, it’s yet another 5-star play. t.co/jx5ofHVHPI

— The WARmonger (@TheWARmonger_) June 11, 2026 Not sure if Justin Steele is throwing yet, but this seems like a good step:

During ST we saw @J_Steele21 throwing the football, now we see him playing some basketball – 3 sport star! Great to see Justin in camp while we wait to hear an update on his pitching status. #Cubs pic.twitter.com/haijm0agjg

— Rich Biesterfeld (@biest22) June 11, 2026 The Iowa Cubs had to use a position player pitcher AGAIN last night. Fourth time in ten games. Oof. The team gave up another 20 runs, as their ravaged pitching staff just tries to get through games. Tarik Skubal will officially return to start for the Tigers tomorrow, just 38 days after his micro-needle elbow procedure to remove loose bodies. An unbelievably quick return, and, although maybe he’s a freak, it does suggest that procedure could become the new approach for that particular issue (which, by the way, impacts a lot of pitchers who have opted not to ever get it addressed because they want to avoid surgery and the attendant timeline – imagine now if more guys could have a much easier path to getting their elbow feeling better). Pitchers don’t really have the same availability for a celebration that exactly approximates a bat flip. A hitter already has the bat in his hand, and has to do something with it no matter what. So when he wrecks a ball, he has a huge range of possible ways to celebrate using his body and the bat. Pitchers, meanwhile, have available pretty much only their body. They can shout. Pump a fist. Do a little hop. It’s just not really the same. So Jesse Rogers asked pitchers what they WOULD do in celebration if they could actually do anything. It’s a funny read. White Sox pitcher Davis Martin made me chuckle with this one because of the disparity between the two items: “I wouldn’t mind some artillery back there to celebrate with. I think that would be cool. Or maybe a sparkler.” So either a gigantic explosion … or maybe a sparkler. The only Cubs pitchers who were included were Jameson Taillon and Daniel Palencia. From Taillon: “I’d do like a pour of the coffee and then a pinkie-up sip. We’d call it the cup of Jamo.” Very on brand, and it would be funny to see. And from Palencia, also very on brand for the ‘Gasolina’ pitcher: “When you’re pumping gas and you put the pump back, I’d like to try that. Cause I throw hard.” I find extreme guys like this really fun to follow:
